Experiment details

Abstract

This experiment investigates the cluster structure of 12Be via resonant elastic scattering of an 8He beam on a 4He active target, using the ACTAR TPC detector at GANIL, complemented by a silicon wall detector placed at the downstream end of the active volume. The resonances populated in 12Be in the excitation energy range 11.6–13 MeV are expected to decay predominantly through the 4He+8He channel (ground state). This energy region lies near several cluster decay thresholds: the 4He+8He(g.s.) threshold at 8.96 MeV, the 6He+6He(g.s) threshold at 10.1 MeV, and the 5He+7He threshold at 12.23 MeV. The detector was filled with a gas mixture of 4He (97%) and C4H10 (3%) acting as a quencher, at pressures of 700 and 900 mbar. The beam energy was set to 1.774 MeV/u. The excitation energy resolution achieved is around 80 keV. Three triggers are available: a beam counter (CFA, cylindrical proportional low-pressure gaseous detector positioned upstream of the active volume, 1/1000 downscale), a silicon wall trigger validated by the CFA, and a pad plane trigger active outside the beam veto region. The measurement of excitation energy spectra and angular distributions aims to constrain the spin and parity of the resonances, and to shed light on the alpha-cluster structure and molecular states in 12Be near these thresholds.
