Experiment details

Abstract

A general picture of fission depicts a decreasing influence of the shell effects with increasing fission excitation energy, making the process driven by almost pure liquid-drop properties. Recently, some features in the fragment mass distribution, commonly associated with shell effects, appeared in a series of experiments with high excitation-energy fusion-fission reactions. However, the fragments neutron excess (N/Z) at the scission point of high-energy fission of 250Cf, measured in our previous experiment in VAMOS, suggests that the isospin of the fragments might also play a role in these results. Another factor that can influence the characteristics of the fragment distribution in high-energy fusion-fission reactions is the contribution from quasi-fission channels, of which the experimental measurement of the fragments N/Z distribution and the effect of structure are not available, so far. In order to understand the role of shell effects and of the fragments N/Z on high-energy fission and quasi-fission, we propose to measure and characterize the scission point in a series of high-energy fissioning systems produced in fusion-fission reactions, studied in inverse kinematics at VAMOS.
